Trail Etiquette and Electric Bike Use in Northern Minnesota By Paul Nye

A Guide for Safe and Respectful Riding:

The Leech Lake area, as well as many regions throughout Minnesota, have become a national
destination – if not a national treasure – for its scenic beauty and extensive network of paved
recreational trails. The hundreds of miles of paved recreation trails offers a unique experience
for all outdoor enthusiasts seeking a non-motorized experience, but especially for bicyclists.
With the rising popularity of electric assist bicycles (e-bikes), it is crucial to understand and
practice proper trail etiquette to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Understanding E-Bikes and Their Impact

Electric assist bicycles have become increasingly popular due to their ability to make cycling
accessible to a broader audience. E-bikes provide motorized assistance, enabling riders to travel
longer distances and tackle challenging terrains with ease. In Minnesota, e-bikes are classified as
bicycles, provided they have a motor of 750 watts or less and do not exceed speeds of about 30
mph on flat terrain without pedaling. While legal on these trails, the use of e-bikes, especially
rental units, has introduced new challenges, primarily concerning safety and etiquette. Because
of this, a guide to trail etiquette may be useful for casual cyclists wanting to enjoy a two-wheeled
adventure on Minnesota’s paved recreational trail system while on vacation. While the focus of
this guide is on E-bike use, trail etiquette applies equally to all cyclists and trail users.

Trail Etiquette for All Riders

1. Respect Speed Limits and Control Your Speed: One of the primary concerns with ebike
usage is the tendency of some riders to operate these bikes at high speeds, often
reaching up to 30 mph. It is crucial to adhere to the recommended speed limits, generally
around 10-15 mph, especially in crowded areas. Riders should always be in control of
their bikes and adjust their speed according to trail conditions and traffic.

2. Announce Your Presence: When approaching other trail users, whether pedestrians or
slower cyclists, it is essential to announce your presence. A simple bell ring or a verbal
“On your left” can prevent accidents and ensure that others are aware of your approach.

3. Pass Safely and Courteously: Passing should be done on the left, maintaining a safe
distance from the person being overtaken. Riders should pass slowly and avoid startling
others. After passing, return to a comfortable speed that does not endanger others.

4. Yield to Pedestrians and Slower Traffic: Cyclists, including e-bike users, should always
yield to pedestrians. In areas with high foot traffic, slowing down and giving right of way
to walkers ensures a harmonious coexistence on the trails.

5. Be Mindful of Trail Conditions: Trails can vary in width, surface, and usage. Riders
should be vigilant about changing conditions, such as wet or uneven surfaces, and adjust
their riding accordingly.
MN Bicycling Regulations

Minnesota law requires all cyclists, including those on e-bikes, to follow the same rules as
motorists. This includes stopping at stop signs, signaling turns, and riding on the right side of the
trail. E-bike users should familiarize themselves with local regulations and ensure their
equipment, such as lights and brakes, are in proper working order.

While e-bikes offer an exciting way to explore Northern Minnesota’s beautiful trails, it is crucial
for all users to practice responsible and courteous behavior. By adhering to trail etiquette and
local regulations, we can create a safer and more enjoyable environment for everyone.
