New Member – Northern Community Radio – KAXE/KBXE
Northern Community Radio – KAXE 91.7 FM/KBXE 90.5 FM is an independent, nonprofit, community radio station. Established in 1976, with enthusiasm and grit, we were the first rural public radio station in the United States. With station and tower locations in Grand Rapids and Bemidji/Bagley, as well as a translator in Brainerd at 89.9 FM, our signal reaches 160,000 people across Northern Minnesota. We also can be streamed at kaxe.org.
Our mission is to build community in Northern Minnesota. Our 17-person staff does this by telling the stories of the people and the land through music, conversation, local news, and events.
We’re a different kind of radio station. Most of our music programming is hand curated by a diverse group of local volunteers and staff. We’ve got real people playing a fresh, eclectic mix of new and old, folk, rock, jazz, blues, and world music.
The rest of our programming is just as unique as the music we play—weekly call-in shows, Green Cheese Trivia, Phenology, and What’s For Breakfast? invite listeners to join us on-air. Our Up North Report features local news, the Area Voices program highlights regional artists, and our weekday Morning Show offers information that you simply won’t find anywhere else.
We love connecting with our neighbors in northern Minnesota by hosting, and co-hosting, a wide variety of events throughout our area: live music shows, trivia nights, educational nature walks, and storytelling events, just to name a few. On the first Saturday after each Labor Day we bring in nationally known musicians for a day long music festival, Riverfest. Held on the banks of the Mississippi River this is a family-friendly event celebrating music and community.
We are excited to join the Leech Lake Area Chamber and get know the area’s businesses and community members, and we invite you to tune in, check out our website, and get to know us!
