A moment in time: Walker’s Largest Steamboat
The Northland was built in 1907 for Jimmie Long and the Northland Pine Tree Lumber Company. Thomas Welsh, father to Mary who was married to Ernest Hemingway, used the boat in his logging operation on Moonlight Bay. In 1915 the Northland was sold to Walker businessmen for use as an excursion boat. It proved too expensive to operate. In the 20s John Andrus used her timbers in the construction of the house, still in use, at Tianna Farms.
