A moment in Time: Ice Wagons
Ice wagons were essential in the success of the lumber camps in getting the logs out of the woods. Ice wagons followed the rut cutters on trails and had barrels of water which were released in the ruts. The ruts froze during the night and sleighs loaded with huge logs were able to travel with ease. Women sometimes were hired to fill the barrels with water and drive the wagon down the trail.
