In 2008, Huddle’s Resort celebrated its 80th year in business. Roy Huddle’s parents, Les and Bernie, and grandfather Roy, started the resort on the south shore of Leech Lake in 1928. In those days, the main highway (now Hwy 200) ran in front of the lodge at Huddle’s and through the small community of Whipholt bringing with it a steady stream of travelers and early vacationers to Leech Lake’s most famous shore. (Today, the highway is located safely out-of-the-way well behind the resort and the “main street” is now a quiet, private resort drive.) Young Roy grew up learning the many facets of running a successful resort, discovered what people believe constitutes a “good vacation,” and over the years has also taught 4,000 kids to water-ski!
“I grew up with many of the kids who now come here as grandparents,” says Roy. “We’ve had the joy of getting to know folks and their kids for many years. There’s something very special about being able to offer families a place where they can celebrate together and spend quality time together. It’s really an honor to know you’ve had a hand in helping that happen.”
Huddle’s Resort offers a variety of amenities, but it’s the spirit of the resort that keeps guests returning year after year—and what keeps Roy and Kay excited about welcoming guests to a vacation they are sure to remember.
