Here are the latest ice out pictures. These pictures were taken on Monday 5/7. Most of the bays on Leech Lake are ice free and have been for a couple of days now. Walker Bay was VERY close to being ice free as of 5:30 tonight. Looking north from Whipholt the ice looked very dark and broken. The area main lake around pelican island and north looked like it was still holding fairly strong, but with the rain and warm weather forecasted for the next couple of days the remaining ice should dwindle quickly.
The good news is fishing Leech Lake WILL be an option for opener this year! The only question mark that remains is how much of the main lake will be open and safe to fish.
Either way with the cold water this spring I predict that the walleyes are doing to be shallow and willing to bite a jig tipped with a minnow. A Windblown shore line is always a good place to start. The Grand View flats and Pine Point area are usually good areas to start. If that doesn’t seem to be working then I’d look towards shallow sandy areas that have a slightly warmer water temp to be holding the active feeding walleyes.
