The dog days of summer are here. Some days fishing is pretty good, and other days fishing is tough. Walleyes can still be found during the day along some of the break lines in Walker Bay that are just outside of shallow feeding flats. A Lindy rig and a nightcrawler works well to entice a few. After dark walleyes can be found on 7’-11’ flats. Trolling shallow crank baits will surly put a few walleyes in the boat. Trolling crank baits over the main lake flats has also produced a few fish this week.

As far as multi species fishing goes the majority of fish have slipped out of the shallow weeds and onto the deeper weed edges around Leech Lake. A simple jig and minnow near the edge of the deep weeds is sure to catch a variety of fish. Some of the fish we’ve caught while fishing this way this week include walleye, perch, rock bass, crappie, and pike.

The muskie fishing has picked up in the last week or so. Bucktails are turning some of the active fish into bitters.

Leech Lake

Summer patterns are in full swing on Leech Lake with water temps ranging from mid to upper 70’s. Pulling crank baits on and around large weed flats have been productive in and around Sucker and Portage bays. Long lining cranks in the AM and PM low light periods have been best. The south end on the main lake walleye are being caught pulling leadcore and cranks in 18-22 ft of the deeper rock / sand break lines. Smallmouth action continues to be strong on and around rock reefs and points in the main lake using drop shots and tube jigs. Musky action has been strong on days with overcast or with a little wind. Main lake rocks and weeds in the larger bays have produced fish this week.
