Fishing and Ice Report – December 26, 2021

Happy Holidays from Leech Lake Fish House Rentals!

Ice conditions are slowly improving as we head towards the New Year.  Up and down temps throughout the week did not create much additional ice but we are still in pretty good shape given it’s only the end of December.  A significant snowfall event is supposed to happen tonight through this Tuesday so stay tuned for updates.  Here’s what we know as of right now:

Main Lake – the Pine Point / Goose Island area is currently sitting at 12-14 inches of ice in most areas.  We have started the ice road out of Andersons Pine Point Resort and are currently allowing half ton or smaller trucks with single axle wheel houses access to this area out to Goose Island.  Sucker Bay has reports of good ice as well with 13-15 inches in most areas throughout. Stoney Point reports similar ice conditions, however there are a few heaves restricting access to many popular areas.  Caution is advised while traveling, please check ice as you go.

Walker Bay – conditions in the bay continue to slowly improve daily with 6-9 inches off shore and as much as 10-11 reported in some areas close to shore and in Steamboat Bay. The Sand Point area is sitting with a pretty consistent 8-10 inches of ice as well. With the incoming snow, look for some of these areas to have some flooding in the days ahead.  At this time ATV and Snowmobile traffic is all that is advised.

As for fishing, the bite seems to be average to above average for most anglers.  A good selection of multi species seems to be present in many areas.  Green glow Northland Buckshot spoons area producing for Walleyes, as well as Perch.  An active Eelpout bite has shown up during the evening and overnight hours in the Grand View Flats area out of Pine Point. Northern Pike have been very active in all areas of shallow water as well.  Try a medium to large size sucker minnow under a tip-up for those fish larger than 26″ out of the slot.

We have limited availability still moving into January.  Give us a call to book your sleeper or day house for January or February!
