Wintertime in the Leech Lake Area creates a sparkling white playground for visitors of all ages. With the snow comes an abundance of activities to suit everyone’s tastes: snowmobiling, skiing, ice fishing, snowshoeing, sleigh riding, sledding, and winter hiking.
The Leech Lake Area is a snowmobiler’s dream with hundreds of miles of well-groomed trails, including the Paul Bunyan and Heartland Trails, weaving through the surrounding forests and lakes area. The Walker Lakes Area provides over 150 miles of cross-country ski trails through the nearby Chippewa National Forest. The trails range from a simple stretch of the legs to a high level romp up the hills of the Shingobee River Valley. Horseback riding is also a wonderful winter activity and each year we see more people snowshoeing on the trails.
It’s an ice fishing paradise in the Walker Lakes Area. Panfish and walleyes, the big lake or small ones, there is something for everyone who loves ice fishing. Rent a fish house for the day and stay overnight in one of our local resorts, motels, or bed and breakfasts. Don’t forget about shopping in our specialty boutiques and then enjoy a hot dinner in one of our many restaurants.
