The Waddle Like a Duck 5k, 10k and Half Marathon drew 279 participants. Race organizers had not ordered enough medals and performance shirts to meet demand. As a result, registration had closed early and there was no onsite registration available. This disappointed some who had hoped to participate. Race organizers are planning for a 25% increase in participants in 2018.
The event, partially underwritten by Shores of Leech Lake resort and City Sanitary service, donated $5,000 to the Walker Area Community Center, $1,000 to Walker Area Pregnancy Support, $300 to the American Legion Riders and $250 to Walker Youth Hockey.
In addition to a larger event, organizers have a few improvements in mind for 2018 including more porta-johns on the course and a larger, festival-like atmosphere at the start/finish area.
