Member of the week: Walker Animal Hospital
Dr. Steven Ekholm (Steve) purchased what is now Walker Animal Hospital in June of 1982. He has been a member of the community and the Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce for 36 years. His veterinary hospital has been expanded twice since moving here and another expansion is planned for this year. The addition will provide the space for the care of more pets with an expanded animal care team. Steve says, “We want to be advocates for our clients’ pets and our goal is to care for their pets as we would care for our own. We also strive to treat our clients as we would like to be treated. Even though we treat pets, veterinary medicine is a people profession.” Since Dr. Ann Burrell’s retirement in December, Steve has been only veterinarian on the animal care team. He also serves as the veterinarian for Paws and Claws Rescue and Resort in Hackensack. Steve’s daughter Annika Arrowwood is in her second year at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Minnesota, she has been working with her father for most of her life and she will be joining the practice as a doctor in May 2021. Annika and her husband, Dave, also own and operate the Village Square Café’. Steve’s wife, Jane, is co-owner of the animal hospital and is currently serving as an interim pastor at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston, MN.
