After a long wait, we finally had renters on the ice this weekend. Fridged temps mid week through the weekend improved ice conditions greatly not only on Leech Lake but lakes all over the state. Currently we are sitting on a consistent 9-11 inches of ice in most areas except in areas where open water existed during the early part of the week around Goose Island. What was open water a week ago today finally froze over on Tuesday night and is still an area of caution at this point. We will be monitoring and checking that ice daily as it continues to improve each day.
As for fishing, the Perch bite was very good overall for the weekend. Most renters were able to go home with a couple limits of 9-11 in perch along with a few 12 and even 13 inchers reported. Full fathead or rainbow minnows on set lines were best bets with a single #6 plain hook. The walleye report was decent with most fish coming during the evening and overnight hours on set lines or some kind of reaction bait such as a jigging rap or rippin rap. Lots of Pike action throughout the day and (surprisingly) evening hours also occured with most fish however caught were in the protected 22-26inch slot limit. A few bonus eelpout also were caught throughout the weekend during the evening hours.
We still have a few rentals available for next weekend. We are currently still limited to sxs and wheeler traffic as of now but will update as things change throughout the week. Give us a call or send us a message too book with us now that we have officially started the 2024 season!
