Awesome Events in August
August is a big month here in Walker! From Walker Bay Day to Cajun Fest, to Walker Bay Live and the Leech Lake Regatta, you really “aughtta” be sure to check ‘em all out!
Walker Bay Day – Saturday, August 3rd
Ready for a whole day of fun for all ages? With activities from a 5k Run/Walk and Fly Fishing Clinic to Rad Reptiles and Sand Castle Building, Walker Bay Day truly offers something for everyone!
Things kick off in the morning with the 5k run/walk and a variety of sailing and fishing clinics. Younger folks can learn their way around a rod and reel at the kids’ fishing clinic, while grown-ups can check out the sailboat clinic or fly fishing clinic.
At 11:00 AM, things really get going with the arrival of some RAD reptiles, bouncy houses and other inflatables, and vendors from around town. Plus, registration opens for the Big Dig! In case you’re not familiar, the Big Dig is like beachcombing version of an Easter Egg hunt. Instead of scouring the lawn for eggs, kids get to dig through a huge pile of sand to find their prizes! The Big Dig is divided into three different age groups to ensure age-appropriate prizes for everyone.
Throughout the rest of the afternoon, all sorts of events and activities take place, including a pow wow and sand castle building.
Best of all, Walker Bay Day is a FREE event — simply stop by Walker City Park and join us!
Leech Lake Regatta – Friday – Monday, August 9th – 12th
Since 1971, sailors and sailing fans alike have gathered on Leech Lake every year for the Leech Lake Regatta. Dozens of sailboats from clubs and marinas around the state compete in races throughout the weekend. In between, there is plenty of time for camaraderie, music, campfires, and of course, the Sunday Evening barbecue!
Whether you’re interested in competing alongside the other sailors in your own craft or enjoy watching the boats from the shore, all are welcome! While registration for the race includes your tickets to the Awards Banquet, anyone is welcome to purchase tickets to both the Awards Banquet and the Sunday evening barbecue.
For more information or to register, visit the Shores of Leech Lake website.
Cajun Fest – Friday – Saturday, August 16th & 17th
Featuring delicious Cajun-style food, live music all weekend long, plus parades, dances, and more, Cajun Fest at Northern Lights Casino Hotel is a southern celebration like no other in the Northland! Groove along to live performers playing southern styles ranging from classic Cajun to Zydeco, French, and Blues. Kids get to join the Children’s Parade and Friendship Dance, while grown-ups march in a parade of their own, right on into the Mardi Gras party to close out the night!
